Job Description

Based in San Francisco, CA, the successful candidate will be a core part of a team of researchers developing novel gene-editing based cell therapies, exploring the immunomodulatory properties of engineered immune cells, and contributing to Casebia’s strategic research plans in hematology. He/she will guide projects from discovery through GLP preclinical studies, and work with Process Development to enable efficient cell manufacturing for pre-clinical and IND enabling studies. Candidates must have demonstrated expertise with T-cell biology (in particular cytolytic and regulatory T cells).  Proficiency utilizing gene editing tools, experience with viral (e.g. AAV, lentiviral) gene transfer vectors, and familiarity with the spectrum of human autoimmune disorders and associated animal models are desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Create, characterize, and develop genetically engineered immune-modulatory cell therapy products for autoimmune and inflammatory diseases
  • Identify, plan, and execute key IND-enabling studies demonstrating engineered cell function, specificity, persistence, and safety
  • Augment existing engineered cell approaches with new approaches that generate complementary immunomodulatory cell phenotypes
  • Serve as a scientific liaison for a major external research collaboration
  • Invent and secure intellectual property relating to engineered T cells or related immune cells and their therapeutic applications

Required Skills

  • Ph.D. in immunology or a relevant scientific discipline plus 5 years’ experience with a post-doctoral fellowship or industry experience or a combination of both
  • Deep knowledge of T cell biology
  • Genetic engineering expertise; synthetic biology / engineering mind-set
  • Facility with animal experimentation and models of autoimmunity
  • Familiarity with CAR-T cell engineering desirable
  • Proven track record of experimental excellence and publication in the field
  • Strong collaborative skills on both internal and external projects
  • Focus, passion, and urgency for developing important new therapies for devastating diseases
