Job Description
Washington State University (WSU) is seeking a Scientific Assistant with a strong background in animal husbandry, management of rodent and large animal breeding, and experience working in a research laboratory setting to support the generation of gene-edited animal research models through the WSU Animal Production Core and Gene Editing Reagent Core. This position will also have responsibility for research development and support activities including participating in design, development, and implementation of methods for research projects.
Responsibilities will include, among others; collecting and working with gametes and pre-implantation embryos; performing surgical and non-surgical embryo transfers; assisting in the optimization of embryo collection, culture, and cryopreservation conditions; rodent and large animal husbandry; working in a molecular biology laboratory setting to generate high quality plasmid DNA and CRISPR/Cas9 reagents for use in gene-editing; managing daily laboratory operations, ordering supplies, keeping inventories, maintaining a safe working environment; and assisting with the collection, analysis, and interpretation of research data.
The successful candidate will work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies.
Required Qualifications Include: Experience in animal husbandry, general laboratory experience (including reagent preparation, basic aseptic technique, and basic chemistry knowledge), and ability to understand and follow laboratory SOP’s.
Preferred Qualifications Include: MS in animal sciences or life sciences related discipline, experience performing artificial insemination and/or embryo transfer in cattle or pigs, and experience working with mice and rats in a research setting (including administering treatments, performing surgical procedures, and maintaining breeding colonies). Additional preferred qualifications include experience in molecular biology (including PCR, plasmid cloning, and basic microbiology), and training or background in reproductive biology or experience working with mammalian gametes and embryos.
