Position Focus:
Under the direction of the Principal Investigator (Dr Srikant Rangaraju), the Research Associate will function as the Lab Manager and independently conduct research experiments and collect scientific data through complex laboratory experiments, techniques and procedures, generally focused on neuroscience. The research is focused on the mechanisms of neurodegeneration in Alzheimer’s and related disorders and stroke, using a combination of molecular biology methods, in vitro cell culture models, in vivo mouse models and proteomics and transcriptomics approaches. Mouse handling, genotyping, qPCR and RT-PCR, as well as histological techniques are heavily utilized and are therefore necessary skill sets. Experience with mouse behavioral studies, tissue processing for RNAseq or mass spectrometry, are optional skills.
Job duties include: Independently design, conduct and analyze laboratory experiments and protocols with limited supervision from Principal Investigator. Participate in the prioritization of research initiatives and take a leadership role in experimental research design and troubleshooting. Experiments require both handling mice, animal husbandry, genotyping, and processing tissue for immunohistology. Assess behavioral deficits in mouse models of disease. Preparation of tissue sections and staining with antibodies followed by microscopy. Prepare written and oral reports of data for internal use. Maintain and oversee the use and availability of equipment and supplies. Interact with internal staff and with the relevant biological safety departments to coordinate research investigations in a safe environment. Perform additional functions related to research activities. Perform annual laboratory checks/reports and participates in IACUC protocol preparation and review. Laboratory housekeeping including daily checks, logs, ordering reagents and supplies Participate in technical training of laboratory staff, and students. Coordinate shipping of materials and tissues as needed for research work and collaborations.
Essential Duties
1. Recommends the design and implementation of procedures and protocols under the direction of a higher-level authority. 2. Investigates, analyzes, and reaches preliminary scientific conclusions related to research planning 3. Ensures data results are compiled, analyzed, and presented properly. 4. Analyzes, develops and interprets scientific results. Maintains clear documentation of results. Prepares scientific reports and papers for research proposals and published reports. 5. Performs independent research and laboratory techniques and participates in experimental research planning. 6. Interacts with internal contacts including the PI, research assistants, graduate students, Radiation Safety and Biological Safety officers, and Animal Care personnel to discuss and evaluate research results and to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the laboratory. 7. Interacts with external contacts such as researchers at other institutions, staff at biotechnology and reagents companies to consult on research methods and to keep abreast of product information and developments. 8. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Master’s Degree in a scientific discipline and one year experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Demonstrated ability of scientific problem-solving skills, ability to analyze and interpret experimental data and solid track record of scientific achievement.

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with the ability to multi-task, maintain confidentiality and manage a broad variety of duties and shifting priorities

Ability to function within a multi-disciplinary team of trainees, staff & faculty members in the laboratory, and interface with other collaborating laboratories. Ability to multi-task and communicate effectively. Ability to plan ahead and anticipate potential problems and to take independent initiatives to problem-solve.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Technical skills necessary for this position include: qPCR, RT-PCR (Taq man assays), immunohistochemistry (free-floating and paraffin embedded histology), mouse colony maintenance, breeding, genotyping.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Master’s degree or combination of education and experience (Bachelor’s Degree + at least 3 years of hands-on laboratory research experience).
