Location: Riverside, US

Job Description

Research Assistant position in Stem Cell and RNA Biology available at UC Riverside

A position of a Research Assistant is available in the Murn Lab at the Department of Biochemistry at the University of California, Riverside. Research in the Murn Lab focuses on processing of ribosomal RNA and tRNAs, their modifications, and the activities of their regulating RNA-binding proteins. We are interested in understanding how stem cell fate is regulation by RNA processing, how misregulation of RNA biogenesis can lead to human disease, and how our ability to impact these processes can be harnessed to benefit human health. To achieve these goals, we use a variety of approaches that include biochemistry, genetics, structural biology, deep sequencing, and bioinformatics.

About the Junior Specialist role:

Under the guidance of Dr. Jernej Murn, you will carry out research and develop new functional genomics tools for mammalian system that will allow for addressing a wide range of biological questions. The position will involve independent but collaborative work and will entail techniques like molecular cloning, cell culturing, preparation of sequencing libraries and their analysis. This opportunity would thus be ideal for a hardworking, passionate, self-motivated professional who enjoys balancing multiple priorities and is looking for a 1-2 year career experience before beginning graduate studies at UCR.

What we provide:

• A competitive compensation package with comprehensive health and welfare benefits

• Exposure to groundbreaking research and working with a collegial, close-knit lab team

• Opportunities to present data in group meetings

• Opportunities for professional development, including a potential leadership on a project that aligns with your interests and capabilities

What you will do:

• Perform a variety of laboratory and investigative procedures, including culturing mammalian cell lines, basic molecular biology techniques, standard biochemical assays (such as immunoblotting or affinity purification), cloning, and basic fluorescence microscopy.

• Work efficiently and cooperatively with postdocs, graduate students, and other lab members.

• Operate lab equipment and prepare and order necessary supply stocks.

• Collect, verify, record, and compile experimental data.

• Participate in laboratory meetings and read literature applicable to the research area(s).

• Prepare, order, and maintain stocks of necessary reagents, solutions, and supplies.

What you bring:

• A bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences is required.

• Previous hands-on research experience working in a laboratory is required.

• Understanding of and experience with the basic molecular and cellular biology techniques.

• Previous experience with tissue culture of mammalian cells and molecular cloning is preferred.

• Experience with bioinformatic data analysis is desired but not required.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and time management skills with strong attention to detail.
