Job Description

Reporting to the Head of Molecular Technologies, the Principal Scientist/Associate Director will contribute to a fast paced and innovative team of scientists and research associates focused on developing novel gene editing and delivery technologies. The goal of the Molecular Technologies team is to engineer these technologies at the mechanistic level, and advance the cutting edge of delivery and gene editing systems. The individual in this role will leverage their deep expertise and knowledge of genome editing to identify and interrogate sites of therapeutic interest, assess off-targets, contribute to strategic planning, and coordinate gene editing efforts. The ideal candidate will have a track record of developing assays and techniques for genome editing, experience leading a team, and ability to coordinate efforts across departments. 

Responsibilities

● Lead and grow a diverse team of scientists and research associates experienced in genome editing technologies. 

● Mentor junior team members. 

● Lead the team to innovate and achieve company milestones. 

● Help drive emerging gene editing technologies towards human therapeutics. 

● Develop high-throughput strategies to assay gene editing outcomes. 

● Engineer and evaluate new technologies and approaches for genome editing. 

● Design, execute and troubleshoot high throughput experiments to optimize gene editing efficiency in cell lines using novel delivery methods. 

● Perform experiments using multiple techniques to measure genome editing events, copy number variation, SNPs, and extra-genomic nucleic acid molecules (digital droplet PCR, next generation sequencing etc.). 

● Collaborate across various research teams within the company, communicate plans and discoveries, and help to foster thoughtful and productive scientific dialogue. 

● Document scientific progress with rigor, thoroughness, precision and an eye towards collaboration. 

Required Skills

● PhD in molecular biology, structural biology, biochemistry, molecular virology or cell biology, or similar with at least 8+ years’ hands-on research experience and 3+ years of industry experience. Management experience prefered. 

● Strong candidates with Bachelors (10-12 years) or Masters (8-10 years) in related disciplines will also be considered. 

● Demonstrated experience in molecular and cell biology. 

● Self-motivated, organized, and excellent communication skills. 

● Our ideal candidate will have extensive experience in multiple CRISPR-based gene editing technologies, extensive knowledge of the CRISPR landscape, and experience in mammalian genome editing with CRISPR/Cas9 or similar technologies.

● Expertise with a broad spectrum of molecular biology, cell biology, and biochemical methodologies are desirable. 

● Experience with rational design and/or directed evolution of proteins and/or nucleic acids is preferred.
