Postdoctoral Fellow on Neuroimmunology
 
A postdoctoral research fellow is available in the laboratory of Dr. Shinichi Kano (www.skano-lab.org) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. The laboratory investigates neuroimmune mechanisms underlying brain function and dysfunction and aims to discover new biological concepts that can be harnessed to develop therapeutic strategies for psychiatry and neurological disorders.
 
Current projects include but are not limited to the followings:
1) Intercellular communications between neurons, glia, and immune cells during neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration
2) Immune modulation of brain development
3) Blood-brain communications via extracellular particles underlying brain function and behavior
 
The successful candidate is expected to be strong in communication and analytical skills, self-motivated and success-driven, and able to work as a team member and an independent scholar. The candidate needs to be within two years of their Ph.D. or equivalent degree and show a record of high-quality scientific productivity (e.g., a first author publication or manuscript).
 
The candidate will be exposed to the following skills to conduct their projects. Expertise in at least one of these skills will be preferred:
— Neurobiology (e.g., immunohistochemistry, stereotactic surgery, in vivo calcium imaging, electrophysiology)
— Immunology (e.g., flow cytometry)

— Rodent behavior research (e.g., social interaction, memory task)
— Extracellular particle biology (e.g., vesicle/particle collection, characterization, quantification, molecular profiling)
— Bioinformatics skills (e.g., RNA-seq analysis)
— Biostatistics and/or basic machine learning skills (e.g., supervised and unsupervised learning)
 
All Kano lab members are expected to constantly learn new research skills and concepts, openly share and discuss their data, and achieve their scientific and career goals, in close communication with the PI. The position will be initially available for one year, with yearly renewal, based on their performance and our funding availability. The successful candidates are encouraged to apply for independent fellowships for her/his future career development.
