Job Description

Postdoctoral Research Fellow Position in Neurovascular Coupling

Department of Physiology
Medical College of Georgia
Augusta University

The Department of Physiology at The Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral research scholar position in the lab of Dr. Philip O’Herron (https://www.augusta.edu/mcg/phy/faculty/phys_faculty_oherron.php). The laboratory focuses on understanding the role of functional hyperemia (the increase in blood following neuronal activation) in proper neuronal function. We use state-of-the-art optogenetic techniques to block functional hyperemia while monitoring blood flow, neural activity, and various metabolic substrates in neurons, astrocytes, and the intercellular space using two-photon imaging, eletrophysiological recordings and metabolic sensors. We seek to determine how neural responses to visual stimuli are affected by the loss of functional hyperemia and if the metabolic function of the neurovascular unit is altered.
Additionally, we study a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease to determine how neurovascular coupling is altered in this disease state and if functional hyperemia is more critical in aging and disease than in young healthy animals.
Technical expertise in some of the following areas is preferred but not required: in vivo two-photon imaging, in vivo electrophysiology, animal surgeries, and Matlab programming.
Scientific expertise in some of the following areas is preferred: visual neurophysiology, neurovascular coupling, neurometabolism, glia-neuron interactions, and cerebral blood flow.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate degree. To apply for this position, please apply through http://www.augusta.edu/hr/jobs/university/index.php (Job Id: 258134). You can also directly send your CV and contact information to Dr. Philip O’Herron at [Please click the Apply button for the link or email].
