The Keck School of Medicine (KSOM) at the University of Southern California (USC) is currently seeking a talented and self-motivated Postdoctoral Scholar to join the Laboratory of Dr. Albert E. Almada in the Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery; Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine (SCRM); and the Leonard Davis School of Gerontology.
The Almada Laboratory is investigating one of the greatest mysteries in muscle regenerative biology—how stem cells are turned on (activated) to rebuild functional muscle tissue after traumatic injury. Our multi-disciplinary team integrates state-of-the-art experimental and bioinformatic approaches to study this biological phenomenon at the molecular, cellular, and organ level in various vertebrate species including mouse, human, and lizard muscle cells. Our laboratory is supported by two junior faculty awards from the American Federation of Aging Research (AFAR), Baxter Foundation, and recent R01 from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS).
For this position, we are seeking a postdoctoral scholar to engage in a project investigating stem cell dysfunction in the deadliest muscle degenerative disease in the human population, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). We identified new therapeutic targets, and we will test for reversal of stem cell and muscle dysfunction in mouse and human models. Opportunities for human studies available through our ongoing collaboration with Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles (CHLA), where we will obtain DMD patient muscle samples.
Preferred Experience:
–       Basic skills in molecular and cellular biology (i.e., qPCR, western blots, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, and manipulation of gene activity via lentiviral delivery of shRNAs/CRISPR gene editing, etc.).
–       Mouse genetics, mouse husbandry, and mouse colony maintenance, as well as using tissue-specific, loss-of-function (LOF) and gain-of-function (GOF) in healthy and disease mouse models.
–       Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorting (FACS) of primary and cultured mouse and/or human cells to assay ex vivo and in vivo cell fate decisions.
–       Proficiency with RNA- (bulk and single-cell) and CUT&RUN-sequencing including experimental design, library preparation, and data analysis is highly desired (or ability to learn!)
–       Handling and processing of human tissue samples and culturing of human cells.
–       Experience with generating human stem-cell specific organoids in culture from FACS-sorted cells is a plus.
 Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1.    Serve as a research trainee for the purpose of enhancing and developing research competencies. Participates in planning, designing, and conducting highly technical and complex research projects under the direction of a supervisor.
2.    Analyzes and evaluates research data and provides interpretations requiring significant knowledge of a specialized area of research. Searches literature and utilizes all available resources including electronic, regarding new methodology and design experiments accordingly.
3.    Contributes to the development of research documentation for publication and/or prepares technical reports, papers, and/or records.
4.    Candidates will work on research projects in a highly interdisciplinary environment. While each postdoctoral fellow is expected to drive an independent project in muscle disease biology, there are many opportunities to work with senior research associates, technicians, PhD students, and master’s students on other collaborative projects.
