Job Description

We are looking for highly motivated M.S. and Ph.D. students interested in investigating interactions between the diet and microbiome in human health starting in August 2024 (Fall semester) in the Department of Food and Animal Sciences within College of Agriculture at Tennessee State University.

Projects will primarily focus on understanding the interactions between food, gut microbiome, and human health by combining multi-omics methods, including metagenomics and metabolomics. The successful candidate will also work with bacterial culturing techniques, cell assays, and animal models to understand the biological functions of the microbes and molecules.

M.S. in Food and Animal Sciences

  • Candidate must have an equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a major in Biological Sciences Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or related discipline with enthusiasm to handle large datasets.
  • Experience working with bacterial culturing techniques, anaerobic workstation, mass spectrometry, high-throughput cell-based assays, and animal models will be advantageous.
  • Experience in analyses of multi-omics data such as next-generation sequencing data and/or metabolomics data in Python is desirable.
  • Experience with R and visualization will be a plus.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills in English are desirable.

Ph.D. in Food and Animal Sciences

  • The ideal Ph.D. candidate will have a master’s degree in Bioinformatics, Microbiology, Computational Biology, Systems Biology, Biotechnology, or a related discipline.
  • Candidate must have a thesis-based master’s degree from an accredited university to be considered for a Ph.D. degree.
  • Experience in analyses of multi-omics data such as next-generation sequencing data and/or metabolomics data in Python.
  • Experience with cloud platforms, workflow management systems, Git, and R will be a plus.
  • Experience working with bacterial culturing techniques, anaerobic workstation, mass spectrometry, high-throughput cell-based assays, and animal models will be advantageous.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills in English are desirable.

Admission Requirements

The following items are required for admission by the graduate school at Tennessee State University:

  1. Statement of Purpose: Describing academic background, previous work/research experience, current research interests, and career goals.
  2. CV: Listing education, work, volunteer, and other relevant experiences.
  3. Reference letters: Three (from an academic mentor or supervisor).
  4. Proof of English proficiency: For international students from non-English speaking countries, proof of proficiency in English is required (IELTS/TOEFL). The minimum university requirement for IELTS is 6.0 and TOEFL is 80.
  5. A minimum quality grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.00 point scale (for an M.S. degree) and 2.5 on a 4.00 point scale (for a bachelor’s degree) and a minimum score of 290 on the GRE (verbal and quantitative, or verbal, quantitative and subject), or 370 on the MAT (for US MS applicants).
