Job Description

The Lab for the Understanding of Network Effects (LUNE) (https://research.seas.ucla.edu/computational-systems-pharmacology/) is looking to hire two NIH-funded postdoctoral scientists to advance two project areas in lab. The lab is highly motivated to understand how protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks can be used to identify novel treatments for untreated diseases.  A major limitation of these methods is their tendency to over-predict phenotypes associated with drug targets and their lack of directional information.

 

The lab was founded in the Department of Bioengineering at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering in July 2021 by Dr. Jennifer Wilson. Early work before and from the lab has established the utility of PPI networks for anticipating drug effects and using clinical data, especially electronic health records, to calibrate and validate predictions from PPI networks. In the first project, we will leverage databases of patient gene variant information to infer directionality in PPI networks in disease-relevant patient tissues. In the second project, we will bridge PPI networks with clinical records to assess predicted drug effects to ultimately reduce overprediction from PPI networks.

 

Job Requirements

–       Ph.D. in Bioengineering, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Medical Informatics or related field

–       A willingness to live and work in Los Angeles (remote positions are not available)

–       Programming experience in Python and on computing clusters

–       Programming experience with GATK and machine learning in skllearn (project #1)

–       Programming experience with DataBricks, SQL, PySpark (project #2)

–       Prior coursework in molecular biology, cell signaling networks, and systems biology
