Job Description

Computational/Data scientist position in Neurodegeneration

We are looking for a scientist with a computational background to study neurodegeneration. The ideal candidate would have a biological background of broad relevance in cell and molecular biology although that is not required.

Our projects revolve around single cell and spatial transcriptomics and other computational tools for understanding gene expression, epigenetics and genomics.  We also have projects in proteomics and biomarker studies using large data sets. In separate projects we are using novel computational tools to study mouse behavior using home-cage behavior software, such as Deep Lab Cut and electrophysiological alterations in neuronal circuits over time.  There will also be numerous opportunities for wet lab projects from cell biology to brain network derangements in the area of neurodegeneration for candidates interested in expanding the repertoire of their interests.  We encourage all intellectually curious applicants with a strong drive to contact us. We have a track record of mentorship and placing our trainees in competitive faculty and industry positions.

Our work utilizing multiple techniques to study different neurological diseases is highlighted in some of our recent publications on genetic ataxias and other degenerative conditions (Cvetanovic M, et al. Nature Medicine, 2011; Edamakanti CR, et al. JCI, 2018; Hu YS, et al. Brain, 2019; Edamakanti CR, et al. Mov Disord, 2021; Edamakanti CR, et al. Journal of Neuroinflammation, 2023; Paumier JM, et al. BioRxiv, 2024).

The applicant will work in a state-of-the-art laboratory in a stimulating intellectual and collaborative environment provided by the Northwestern University Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program and the Davee Department of Neurology. The laboratory is located in the downtown Chicago campus of Northwestern University, just off the “Magnificent Mile”.

We are looking for highly motivated individuals who thrive on intellectual challenges. Applicants must have a PhD or MD degree and a strong background in statistics and coding, including experience in Python, R, or Matlab.

Please submit a C.V. and a brief statement of research interests by email.

Northwestern University is an Equal Opportunity, Affirmative Action Employer of all protected classes, including veterans and individuals with disabilities. Women, racial and ethnic minorities, individuals with disabilities, and veterans are encouraged to apply.  We also welcome interest from international applicants. Hiring is contingent upon eligibility to work in the United States.
