Associate Research Scientist (Braun Lab)

Position Focus:

The Braun Lab (Yale Center of Molecular and Cellular Oncology / Yale Cancer Center / Yale School of Medicine) is seeking a highly motivated Associate Research Scientist (ARS). Under the general direction of the Principal Investigator (PI), the ARS will provide laboratory oversight while bringing strong technical research skills and support within a translational research laboratory studying cancer immunotherapies. Duties include designing and maintaining lab protocols, managing the daily operation of the lab, participating in experimental research planning, performing independent research and laboratory techniques including: biochemistry, molecular biology, flow cytometry, immunology assays, microscopy, and ultimately spatial transcriptomic and protein analysis.

 

Essential Duties:

  1. Manages the daily activities of a research resource laboratory. Oversees the scheduling, use, and availability of instrumentation, supplies, and specialized work areas.
  2. Recommends the design and implementation of procedures and protocols
  3. Investigates, analyzes, and reaches preliminary scientific conclusions related to research planning
  4. Ensures data results are compiled, analyzed, and presented properly.
  5. Analyzes, develops and interprets scientific results. Maintains clear documentation of results. Prepares scientific reports and papers for research proposals and published reports.
  6. Performs independent research and laboratory techniques and participates in experimental research planning.
  7. Interacts with internal contacts including the PI, research assistants, graduate students, Radiation Safety and Biological Safety officers, and Animal Care personnel to discuss and evaluate research results and to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the laboratory.
  8. Interacts with external contacts such as researchers at other institutions, staff at biotechnology and reagents companies to consult on research methods and to keep abreast of product information and developments.
  9. Investigates, analyzes, and evaluates alternative instrumentation, methodologies and techniques to maintain a state-of-the-art biotechnology resource laboratory.
  10. Recommends and develops new protocols and initiates and adapts new techniques to resolve problems.
  11. Conducts research to determine the feasibility and scope of providing new/revised services. Develops and evaluates new techniques and equipment.
  12. Prepares budgets and reports pertaining to laboratory costs and income.
  13. Determines and establishes policies and procedures on laboratory safety consistent with University safety regulations.
  14. Train and mentor new laboratory mentors in laboratory techniques.
  15. May perform other duties as assigned.

 

Required Education and Experience

Doctoral Degree (PhD) in Immunology, Cellular or Molecular Biology, Cancer Biology, Genetics, or a related field. Two years of experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Required Skill/Ability:

  1. Ability to perform independent research and laboratory techniques and participates in experimental research planning. Should be able to carry out research assignments for a muti-faceted research project,
  2. Responsible for daily operation of the laboratory. Therefore, must have the ability to manage ordering and budget for laboratory supplies and equipment. Interact with internal contacts including the PI, research assistants, graduate students, Radiation Safety and Biological Safety officers, State inspectors, and eventually Animal Care personnel to discuss and evaluate research results and to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the laboratory.
  3. Ability to submit and renew biosafety protocols and state licenses as assigned by PI. Interact with external contacts such as researchers at other institutions to export/import reagents (and ultimately animals, if needed). Recommend the design and implementation of procedures and protocols under the direction of a higher-level authority.
  4. Ability to organize weekly lab meetings and preparation of laboratory reagents using biochemistry and molecular biology techniques. May ultimately also manage animal colony and animal protocol (i.e., renewal and modifications). Proven ability to analyze, develop and interpret scientific results; Maintain clear documentation of results.
  5. Ability to prepare scientific reports and papers for research proposals and published reports.
  6. Proven ability to follow directions and work with minimal supervision.
  7. Ability to work in a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary, and intellectually challenging environment, including excellent oral and written communication skills, to conduct both self-directed and guided experimental research.
  8. Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and the ability to work directly with others or to work independently. Ability to independently plan and conduct multiple, complex, basic research studies. Strong technical and scientific abilities to perform complex laboratory experiments and procedures. Detail oriented both in experimental work and in record keeping.
  9. Ability to follow complex, multi-step protocols precisely, understand the scientific basis underlying each step of the protocol, and independently troubleshoot complex, multi-step protocols with limited supervision. Ability to learn new techniques and experimental protocols. Excellent time management skills to manage multiple ongoing projects.
  10. A familiarity with molecular/cellular biology and biochemistry based techniques including but not limited to molecular cloning, lentiviral vector production, cell culture, Western blot, knowledge of CRISPR technology is strongly encouraged.
  11. A familiarity with immunology techniques including but not limited to flow cytometry, ELISA, ELISpot, cytotoxicity assays is strongly encouraged.
