The Business Development & Technology Transfer department at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated and talented individual to join our team as the Assistant Director of Business Development & Technology Transfer. In this role, you will play a crucial part in promoting and managing the Lab’s business development and technology transfer activities. Your primary responsibilities will include protecting and licensing our intellectual property, establishing and nurturing strategic relationships with business partners and investors, managing existing license and research agreements, and facilitating startup activities. Position Responsibilities
Protect and license the intellectual property created at CSHL.
Establish and maintain long-term strategic relationships with business partners and investors.
Manage high-value license and sponsored research agreements as a project manager within Joint Project Teams.
Develop licensing strategies for focus technology areas based on CSHL’s research, including technology valuations, marketing, and market assessments.
Foster faculty-driven startup activities and new venture creation by collaborating with faculty founders, entrepreneurs, investors, and industry partners.
Collaborate with legal counsel to protect intellectual property through patenting or other appropriate tactics for the assigned portfolio.
Conduct relevant art searches for new invention disclosures.
Identify potential licensees and effectively market technologies to them.
Negotiate various types of agreements and work closely with legal counsel to finalize them.
Organize investment showcase meetings involving venture capitalists, senior industry figures, and trustees of CSHL.
Position Requirements
Education:
Advanced degree in biology, including MS, PhD, MBA.
Experience:
Minimum 2-5 years of experience in academic licensing or corporate business development.
Skills:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills and executive presence.
Ability to manage multiple time-sensitive projects simultaneously.
Act with urgency in all stakeholder interactions.
Understanding of intellectual property (patents), contract negotiations, drafting license terms, market research, and analysis.
Ability to work independently.
Working knowledge of contract and patent law is a plus.
High level of ethics and integrity in professional matters.
Proficiency in computer software applications.
